Caves have long served as humanity's earliest shelters, offering refuge from the elements and protection from the unknown. Our distant ancestors found solace in these natural formations, cooking their meals over fires and possibly etching tales of their experiences on cave walls. Now, as we venture back to the Moon, lunar caves are emerging as potential sanctuaries for future astronauts.
On the Moon, a different set of challenges awaits explorers. They must contend with cosmic radiation, solar radiation, meteorites, extreme temperature fluctuations, and impact ejecta. To address these hazards, scientists are looking to the Moon's lava tubes.
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has revealed hundreds of lunar "skylights," collapsed sections of lava tube ceilings that create natural openings. These tubes, formed by ancient volcanic activity, offer vast underground spaces where astronauts could find refuge.
China is actively considering this option. Lunar lava caves might hold the key to protecting future lunar explorers from the harsh lunar environment. These tubes provide a stable temperature environment, shielding astronauts from extreme surface temperatures that swing from 127°C (260°F) in sunlight to -173°C (-280°F) in darkness.
Radiation poses a significant risk on the lunar surface, with levels up to 150 times higher than on Earth. However, within lunar caves, several meters of rock overhead provide effective protection.
China, along with other spacefaring nations, is studying the feasibility of using lunar lava tubes as shelter. Chinese researchers have conducted fieldwork in Chinese lava tubes to gain insights into their potential use on the Moon.
Lava tubes come in two primary types: vertical and sloped entrances. While most lunar tubes identified so far are vertical-opening ones, sloped entrances are preferable as they facilitate easier entry and exit. Rovers could potentially drive into these tubes, offering a more accessible route for exploration.
China has identified potential lunar lava tube exploration sites in the Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility) and Mare Fecunditatis (Sea of Fecundity) regions.
China's lunar exploration strategy includes deploying robotic systems and probes to investigate these caves. These systems could explore and assess the viability of these subterranean spaces for future human habitation.
The long-term vision includes establishing a crewed lunar base inside one of these lava tubes, complete with residential and research facilities, all sheltered underground.
While China's space activities can be shrouded in secrecy, it's evident that they are committed to lunar exploration and potentially creating lunar bases. Their ambition aligns with their strategic goal of becoming a space power.
As China advances its lunar missions, including possible lava tube exploration, it joins other nations in the quest to unlock the Moon's mysteries. The lunar caves, like the ones explored by our ancient ancestors, may soon become a crucial part of our lunar legacy, hosting the marks of humanity's lunar journey for future generations or even alien explorers to ponder.
