On July 1, 2025, astronomers documented a hyperbolic object entering our solar system: 3I/ATLAS. Its orbit confirms it will pass near Earth before leaving again.
This interstellar object exhibits:

Unusual composition: Carbon dioxide–rich with detectable nickel and almost no iron.

Premature cometary activity: Developing a tail and coma far from the Sun, defying prior models.

Colour anomalies: Observed changing from reddish to iridescent green during a lunar eclipse.

Statistical rarity: One of only three known interstellar objects ever detected.
*3I/ATLAS will approach its closest point to Earth in December 2025 at 1.8 AU (269 million km). No threat is posed. Observations will resume in early December after solar conjunction.
